Are you annoyed by that "clicking" sound you likely hear while using Windows XP or Windows Vista? You know, while you're navigating through files in Windows Explorer or surfing the web in Internet Explorer 7, there's a definite click to give you audio feedback on your actions, such as selecting new folders or opening a new website.
Some Windows XP and Vista owners might not be aware of that subtle "clicking" noise, while it drives others simply mad after a short while.
If you fall into the latter category, here's how to fix this problem in WIndows Vista:
1. Go to Start, choose Control Panel, and then click on Hardware and Sound.
2. Select the Sound option and then click on the Sounds tab.
3. Under Programs, scroll down to Windows Explorer and double click on the Start Navigation option. Now you’ll see the option to turn off sound completely by selecting None. Click OK.
In Windows XP, it's virtually the same:
1. Go to Start, choose Control Panel, and then click on Hardware and Sound.
2. Select the Sound option and then click on the Sounds tab.
3. Select the program event called "Start Navigation" and the using the sounds drop down, select "None."

The correct tab in the control panel to customize / turn off sounds is "Personalization" Tab, not "Hardware". Then select "Sounds"

If it's so annoying turn down the volume or just mute it. It amazes me how people will bitch about every little thing and the "click" sound in vista is no exception to this rule.

I prefer to have a sound to give feedback that you did actually click on something.

Running XP Pro SP3, I noticed a constant clicking sound coming from the speakers. Found that the sound generated was the “windows start navigation” sound click. Went to Sound and Audio properties to remove the sound for this particular event. Temporary fix. (Thanks for showing how to disable the click sound.)
However, I still after the root cause. Anyone knows whats causing this? Just concerned there are conflicts somewhere in the config, which may crop up later.
