Stop the *click* sound in Windows

Are you annoyed by that “clicking” sound you likely hear while using Windows Vista? You know, while you’re navigating through files in Windows Explorer or surfing the web in Internet Explorer 7, there’s a definite click to give you audio feedback on your actions, such as selecting new folders or opening a new website.

You know, while you’re navigating through files in Windows Explorer or surfing the web in Internet Explorer 7, there’s a definite click to give you audio feedback on your actions, such as selecting new folders or opening a new website.

Some Windows XP and Vista owners might not be aware of that subtle "clicking" noise, while it drives others simply mad after a short while.

If you fall into the latter category, here’s how to fix this problem in WIndows Vista:

1. Go to Start, choose Control Panel, and then click on Hardware and Sound.

2. Select the Sound option and then click on the Sounds tab.

3. Under Programs, scroll down to Windows Explorer and double click on the Start Navigation option. Now you’ll see the option to turn off sound completely by selecting None. Click OK.

In Windows XP, it’s virtually the same:

1. Go to Start, choose Control Panel, and then click on Hardware and Sound.

2. Select the Sound option and then click on the Sounds tab.

3. Select the program event called "Start Navigation" and the using the sounds drop down, select "None."
