In case you’re not up on your Blu-ray news, an upcoming feature called BD-Live will let movie fans with Internet-connected Blu-ray players gain access to exclusive content, such as the ability to download high-definition trailers for current theatrical releases or additional language packs for the film. Ps3_consolesIn case you’re not up on your Blu-ray news, an upcoming feature called BD-Live will let movie fans with Internet-connected Blu-ray players gain access to exclusive content, such as the ability to download high-definition trailers for current theatrical releases or additional language packs for the film. With last week’s PS3 firmware update, it’s now BD-Live ready.

PlayStation 3 owners can update the machine’s firmware with a free update, enabling the BD-Live feature on supported Blu-ray Discs.

Users will be able to take advantage of online community features such as chatting with friends in another city while watching the same movie, uploading user-generated content like commentary tracks or playing multiplayer games.

Using a wired or wireless connection, you can go to the System Update tab on PS3’s media bar to download the firmware upgrade version 2.2.

Other benefits include:

* The ability to transfer PS3 music and photos to a PlayStation Portable (PSP).

* DivX and WMV format support for files over 2 Gigabytes.

* Resume play, so a Blu-ray Disc or DVD will resume playing at the point it was paused.

* Using the PSP as a remote control to play back music files on the PS3 without turning on the TV.

* Faster Internet browsing.

Who really cares. The last thing I want to do is download more trailers or even language packs. Why not just put this stuff on the actual disk…BRD is supposed to hold more content isn't it? I can't really see any entertainment enhancing features become available. It's just another advertising forum for studios.

  • Nabi says:

I agree with Eric. Who gives a #%!% about this garbage?

  • Kevin says:

I 3rd that notion. I'm with the last two. Who Cares

  • Anthony says:

Why do they keep wasting their time with all that junk, all people is better graphics and better game play thats what they should be focus on!

  • Dave says:

Didn't this update come out last month? That's when I installed it. They should have focused on how the feature is now available through an update for the PS3 and other BR players. Also how many of the first generation players will not be BR 2.0 compatible and this feature wont be available so people should be aware when buying players on sale.

  • Johnny W says:

Agree with Eric… they should just not waste there time on stupid things and bring out better graphics… but i still think xbox 360 is teh greatest system they have ever invented.. Thanks Bill "Billy" Gates

  • Matthew says:

This is definitly old news, people with a PS3 will know that this update came out a couple of months ago and that ver 2.3 came out on Tuesday. BD Live is pretty snazzy though

  • Peter says:

Actually, Firmware update 2.2 did come out last month and it gave PS3 owners the capability of "Picture in Picture" when watching PIP enabled movie disks. This was called "Profile 1.1". Firmware 2.3 was released April 15/08 which now allows internet capability through the ethernet port of the PS3 allowing the downloading of alternate movie endings, movie trailers, total internet capability and access to the Play Station Store. This is huge, and true BD Player enthusiats will tell you that they have waited over a year for this profile;"BD Profile 2.0" to come to fruition.

  • Peter says:

I forgot to mention that those that use their PS3 players as a Blu-ray movie player also got the addition of decoding DTS MA (lossless audio) with the 2.3 Firmware upgrade April 15/08. For BD movie enthusiasts this addition of being able to decode DTS MA and send the audio signal out via PCM was another desirable and hugely anticipated feature!

  • Kathartik says:

"The ability to transfer PS3 music and photos to a PlayStation Portable (PSP)."

this was a rumour. it was not included in the update and they have no date for the release of this patch, although they have promised it's coming.
