Just as network executives doubted Seinfeld’s “show about nothing” could succeed, who knew a game that mimicked everyday life would become one of the world’s best-selling franchises?

Gaming giant Electronic Arts says it is celebrating its 100,000,000th The Sims game sold. The game has been around for eight years and includes PC, console and mobile games (such as The Sims and The Sims 2) as well as the numerous expansion packs (e.g. The Sims 2 Pets) and stand-alone offshoots such as The Sims Life Stories.

According to EA, The Sims is the second-best selling game in video game history, trailing only Nintendo’s Mario Bros. The Sims games have been translated into 20 different languages.

For the uninitiated, The Sims games challenge players to micromanage the lives of little simulated people ("Sims"), which includes nurturing their relationships, advancing their careers and decorating their house with hundreds of unlockable items.

The Sims was created by Will Wright, who also designed the SimCity games and the upcoming life simulation Spore, due out for the PC this September.
