Stop yelling at people through email!

Stop me if this sounds familiar: you’re writing a lengthy email while looking at the keys, but when you look up at the screen you realize you just typed three sentences IN ALL UPPER CASE LETTERS BY ACCIDENT. Great, now you’re screaming at the person you’re writing to.

YellingStop me if this sounds familiar: you’re writing a lengthy email while looking at the keys, but when you look up at the screen you realize you just typed three sentences IN ALL UPPER CASE LETTERS BY ACCIDENT. Great, now you’re screaming at the person you’re writing to.

You can have your computer tell you when you’ve accidentally hit the Caps Lock key. Here’s how to do it in two of the most common types of PCs:

Windows XP:

1. Click the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen, select Control Panel and then open the Accessibility Options icon.

2. Under the Keyboard tab, click the "Use Toggle Keys" checkbox.

3. If you also want your screen to flash when you’ve hit the Caps Lock key, go back to the Accessibility Options screen, select the Sound tab and check the "Use SoundSentry" box. Click Settings button and select "Flash active window" from the "Warning for windowed programs" drop-down box. That’s it!

In Windows Vista:

1. Click the Start button, then Control Panel and select Ease of Access (this is basically the same as the Accessibility Options in Windows XP).

2. Now select "Change how your keyboard works" and check the box that says "Turn on Toggle Keys."

Now you’ll hear a beep when you hit the Caps Lock, Num Lock or Scroll Lock keys on your keyboard.

And if you want a quick keyboard shortcut to change UPPERCASE to lowercase (or vice-versa), click here.

I WORK IN CAPS LOCK, MOSTLY CUASE I CAN READ IT A WHOLE LOT BETTER, PLUS NO MISTAKING ANY LETTERS

  • Khaki says:

Maybe some of you should invest in spell check and/or a dictionary, and learn the difference between you're and your!

  • Enrique says:

ITS ALL IN CAPS SO IT MUST BE TRUE!!!

  • MARG says:

….i came across that, not that long ago….and to be honest it does not realy matter, if you tape big letters or small when you typing your message….it is about information transfer nothing else…computer does not scream at you when you open e-mail, it requires you to read……and for those of you who are so concern with that so called "etiquette"…well…perhaps you should revise how you treat people everyday in person (you can hurt people that way much more)…..and apply everyday "etiquette"….I am positive that there will be many errors…as some people do not know the meaning of that word….

Don't forget that there are those of us, and perhaps it's primarily a generational thing, that spend a *huge* amount of our time on the computer, both at work and at home. When you spend so much time communicating in the electronic written form, your brain starts to associate certain fonts and typefaces with what would otherwise be communicated by volume or tone of voice.

That said, all of this could be as fruitless as trying to educate people on the proper use of the poor, poor apostrophe ;).
So, to people like MARG, perhaps when you open an email it communicates in monotone, but keep in mind that your reader may very well "hear" anger in the way you type. Save the "yelling" for when you really need to be taken seriously or when the subject should be read with a sense of urgency. It might save some of your most important emails from ending up in the reader's "Trash".

Can't say what you mean in this articule
so those that post a honest letter about the article

as a senior with poor close-up vision, it is much easier (contrary to what some people have said) to read things typed in caps…and you don't have to guess if that's an 'a' or an 'e' / an 'i' 'I' or l (in some fonts)…my family and friends all use caps out of consideration for me…not because they are 'yelling' at me…and they know I am not yelling at them when I reply in caps either.

Hasn't everyone forgotten the simple life lessons of Disney's "Bambi"?

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it all.

This article will help many people, and if it doesn't help you, then move on and don't waste your time and energy on being angry at something ridiculously petty.

  • Jean says:

I'll check the settings you describrd BUT THERE EXISTS ALREADY UNDER 'FORMAT' THE OPTION TO CHANGE CASE. You do have to highlight the offending characters but it is easy enough, same as you do for cut/paste!

Interesting….where is the format option for email (Hotmail)?

  • MARG says:

….I think many of you forget that upper or lower case is not to heal your "ego", it is comunication tool ….why all of you are so sensitive….maybe this is reflection of your failures in life….WHO KNOWS?….maybe someone mistreated you in the past….. there is a hunger epidemic in Africa, people get killed in Iraq, and all you have to whine is an upper or lower case…..e-mail is not a PhD. project…

  • HG says:

Interesting….that there is a hunger epidemic in Africa, people getting killed in Iraq, and here you are complaining about whether or not people care about upper vs. lower case. CHILL OUT.

  • MARG says:

    ….HG then why are you responding….bad day?…

  • RJL says:

What a shame it is that people like Marg feel the need to inject their insults into what should be a meaningful discussion.

  • MARG says:

…the only shame it is that people do not have a common sense and are bothered by insignificant things in life….such a petty….

  • Fallon says:

The issue is not whether or not people use upper case to better see what they are typing. The article is about those who have unintentionally typed something in caps and wish to fix it without having to retype everything. Yes, to some it is just as easy to look at the screen and notice it right away. And yes, it is a simple thing for some people to backspace and retype, but obviously then, this article does not apply to them.

In cyberspace, typing all in caps is considered yelling. Simple as that. People who receive emails typed this way might very well see it as the writer being rude.
Also; often times when people are typing something, it's not a general email that they're going to send to a friend. Sometimes it's a business email or someone typing out a resume or some such other important document. Those things require a certain amount of caution to make sure that they appear as though they've been written by someone who takes the time to do things right. Having an entire section typed in caps wouldn't look very professional and sometimes it's easier to make a quick fix than it is to redo the whole thing.

As for the bickering going on over this article, some of you are trolls with nothing better to do than come online and see what sort of trouble you can stir up, and you should be ignored by everyone. For those that are only here to complain and have nothing productive to add, you should think before you type to avoid making fools of yourselves. Anonymity is a wonderful thing. It allows the less intelligent people to act out their stupidity without shame.
