dave the dude thanks you, much...I was tempted to type 'thanx'...loved the above blurb regarding spelling and grammar...t'was delightful, indeed...I hound my kids constantly on proper english...they're 19, 23 and 26( today, actually)...it's a full-time job and can be fun and/or funny, but Annabanna is either really bad or was over-tired at the time ( I hope the latter )...your concern was noted, appreciated and not misplaced.

I don't normally overreact to spelling & grammar mistakes, but this time but I will!! Annabanna has taken the English language to a new low. There were twenty spelling errors (?) in one small statement. Come on people, we are not doing a funny little "can you read this?" joke on e-mail or Facebook. I take great pride in the fact that I can put a sentence together & actually parse it after I've finished. Sometimes I have to look up a word for the correct spelling in that old dreaded dictionary I guess I learned in the "OLD" school.
As far as cell phones are concerned, they are a useful tool in today's hectic life. I have had one for many years & agree that the price is too high. But when you are stuck on a deserted highway in the middle of the night or stuck in a snow drift with no chance of getting yourself out, the phone is priceless.
Yes, it bugs me greatly when people use their phones for no reason except to scream at their friends on the other end (usually teenagers on a bus or in a public place). Perhaps its just letting the world know "hey, look at me, I have my own phone"
In my province it is against the law to use a cell phone while driving. Guess who got caught?-our man with the highest office in our provincial government.
Dave the Dude & I agree completely!!

Ok so how did a discussion on disconnection anxiety turn into yet another rant against cell phones....

I agree that personal calls in public spaces shouldn't be shouted, or expect to be eavesdropped.

I notice that way too many comments don't proofread spelling before hitting post. Would be cleaner if they
did and 'maybe' if they did they would realize how it sounds and reword somewhat.

Back on Topic of Disconnectivity Anxiety
I am Self Employed and have a hard time NOT checking my emails and voicemail for even a two day weekend away.

If my phone/cell rings and I hear it I WILL answer it,
even if it's just to say kinda busy will call you back
in X amount of time, or when not busy with what I'm doing.

I DO manage to turn my cell off in Movie Theatres, Hospital designated no cell zones and other socially innaproriate times for them. (even if it's just turn the ringer off and check the missed call list AFTER the event)

Lesson 1: Statistics are only meaningful if you know what they are referring to! Over 100% penetration in a market means that some people have more than one phone! Work and personal for example. The stats are blind and come from active or registered numbers and are compared to populations.

Lesson 2: Car blew a timing belt along the highway. It was an early failure and covered by warranty so not my fault! The cell phone saved my ass that night. Got me connected to a tow truck, a place to stay, a shop to fix the car and my destination to let them know I was okay. The number of 'phone' booths is dwindling fast. None are along the dark lonely sections of highways if they are. Other drivers don't care about you and just keep driving. Those that might stop are brave these days.

Lesson 3: If you can not put your phone down and function as a person without it, then get a life. It is an information tool. If all you are doing is absorbing information, and not stopping the info intake for a while and turning it into something useful, then you are breathing too much air, eating too much food, taking up too much space. Turn it off, and let the messages accumulate. Delete half of them when you check them as they are irrelevant. The only truly important calls are to expectant fathers to tell them that the baby is coming and they need to get their asses home. Emergency calls are a close second, nothing else is that important.

limit their use. plain and simple. out on a country road...car breakdown, accident-911, late getting home, run out of gas.. all the logical reasons a child would give a parent to convince them they should have on in the first place.. (kind of similar to the old reasoning behind getting a driver's license). kids will always make them toys, but just let it come in handy once, and you'll thank the gods for it. pricey, yes...you may not get away from that...it's the one obstacle i can't quite get around to convince myself to get one. if i did, however...i'd never let the number get out. as i understand it, you pay for your call as well as a call someone else places to you...pricey indeed!

So, I fit into that 12-24 age bracket (I'm 19, if you care to get into specifics). I've never owned a cellphone, and never plan to. My parents tried pushing one on me when I began driving, and I just never took it along with me. It bugs me when I'm on the city bus or walking around town and I see people my age, much younger and older, tuned in to their phones. Whether it be in an all-out conversation, or tapping away text-messaging. That, and everywhere you go, you see white ear-buds hanging from peoples' ears. I own an iPod, yes... But I haven't used it in ages. People go crazy without them! Another thing... I took the train home from College two weeks ago, and I was startled to see nearly EVERYBODY in my car with a lap-top, whether they were watching movies or playing games or whatever. What ever happened to watching the scenery out the window?

We're getting further and further from real life with every passing day... Hmm.
