PC Magazine’s Top 5 tips on recycling your computer:
1. Back up your files. Make sure you have all the files you need from your old system.
2. Wipe your hard drive clean. Although your recycled computer will most likely be ripped up, it’s good to be on the safe side to prevent your personal information from getting into the wrong hands (think identity theft!).
3. Salvage what you can. If there is anything that still works, you may be able to use it down the road or sell it.
4. Find a reputable recycling location. Many recyclers charge a fee to take your computer, but some communities offer free take-back programs.
5. Spread the word. Brag about your good deed to everyone and get them to recycle as well.

Most major city centers have have an electronic recycle that will wipe your computer or cell phone and either give it to Women in Need, or they send them to low income schools. It's always better to give something a second life before recycling it, and this way someone who really needs it will benefit from it!
