Skype: 100 billion minutes and counting

If you’re a Chatty Cathy or Talk-a-lot Tim, chances are you’ve used Skype for making free PC-to-PC calls over the Internet.

SkypelogoSkypeIf you’re a Chatty Cathy or Talk-a-lot Tim, chances are you’ve used Skype for making free PC-to-PC calls over the Internet.

Since launching the service less than 5 years ago, Skype users have spent more than 100 billion minutes talking in total, says the eBay-owned company. Yes, that’s "billion" with a "b."

Even more impressive, this milestone only counts Skype-to-Skype calls and not the popular "Skype Out’ service that lets you call a landline or mobile phone for a few cents per minute.

If any of you doesn't have skype yet… I suggest you get it. It is much more better than MSN or Yahoo… I'm in Mississauga and my head office is in Montreal.. all of us have skype and saved the company a lot of $money$ on long distance calls.. Now You can use your PSP for Skype. I hope the next generation PSP will have a built in Camera with it. Watch out Rogers, Bell and all other Carriers out there.

  • A Navales: Did the cost of bandwidth increased? I'm sure you still saved so I'm just asking for curiosity. ;)

You are right, that Bell, Rogers and others will need to watch out. But they do have their hand in ISP so, they will make money that way.

How is it without high speed internet? My wife is in Nunavut and we tried a web cam but it sucked. Her service is obviously not high speed. She couldn't even download Skype. When we met in Winnipeg a couple of weeks ago, I got it downloaded but we haven't tried it yet.

We found yahoo messenger to be better for calling a land line that has only dialup internet for pc to pc communications and use of a usb webcam. hispeed is better but it worked fster than either skype or msn messenger or messenger live for that.

I am sick-and-tired of the extremely poor customer service from TELUS. They better watch out. The days remaining for the telephone are really numbered.

Wow, my daughter is in Grenada studying and we are in Smiths Falls Ontario. Skype is fast, clear and dependable. Next step is to get a camera. High speed punctuates it's efficiency though, we tried dial up and it did not work well.

McGrath: As far as i know, It haven't. But you're not sure what these providers are cooking up. But who cares…. Hi speed light as more than good enough to do voice calls, choppy for video but still tolerable. I talk to my family and friends in asia half way across the world on a daily basis. Imagine that! Send files to them while talking to them… My fax machine is already gathering dust. I also hooked up my computer to my 40" LCD TV and i feel like I'm in Star Trek…
