Olympus upgrades its rugged point-and-shoot camera

Forget the 790 SW and the 850 SW – Olympus is now shipping its Stylus 1030 SW digital camera for $399. This is a 10.1-megapixel point-and-shoot that can take a serious licking as it’s waterproof, freezeproof, shockproof, crushproof and dustproof.

Yep, take it underwater up to 10 feet, without needing the ugly plastic case most cameras require. Drop this stainless steel and aluminum digicam up to two metres above the ground and you’re laughing. Apply 100 kilograms of pressure or bring it to Nunavut to withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius.

Other features of this rugged point-and-shoot camera include a 3.6x wide-angle zoom lens, in-camera editing functionality, a 2.5-inch colour LCD screen, image stabilization and multiple shooting options (including an impressive panorama mode).
