No iPhone competitor from Microsoft
According to a recent Bill Gates interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, Microsoft will not launch a product that competes directly with the Apple iPhone.
According to a recent Bill Gates interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, Microsoft will not launch a product that competes directly with the Apple iPhone.
The Reuters news agency says Microsoft Chairman was quoted as follows: "No, we won’t do that. In the so-called smart phone business we will concentrate solely on software with our Windows Mobile program." "We have partnerships with a lot of device manufacturers from Samsung to Motorola and this variety brings us significantly more than if we would make our own mobile phone."
Do you think Microsoft should launch a competitor that is more open to third-party app makers? Microsoft has an answer to the iPod – the Zune – which comes to Canada this spring, so why not a Windows Mobile-powered iPhone alternative, too?

The iPhone is great, it's just a little too pricey. I think all the apps are awesome. It's fun having a personalized cellphone. Even though cell phones are for just making phone calls, it is pretty cool that it is also an ipod and has so many new features.
But, I already have a cell phone and computer, so it would be useless to waste 500$ on something I have only bundled up in a small package. I would rather prefer iPod Touch than iPhone, though I haven't gotten it yet.
By the way (This is a response from one of the previous ones):
Obviosly Apple stuff is gonna be expensive!
a) It's branded – you have to admit, most branded items are expensive, this is not an exception. You would never see TNA, PUMA, etc. stuff selling for 10$ unless it is at an outlet or something!
b) It has so much cool features, people actually had to think and invent this phone, so they obviosly want a lot of money for their labor, wouldn't you?
c)Can't think of one but you get my point.
I'm with Michael, I bought the HTC Touch and love it! Is it perfect… no but it provides me with everything I wanted and I am very happy with WM6. I would improve the music interface but as I do not use it often as a MP3 player it suits my basic needs. The US can keep the oversized IPhone.
I can't stand cell phones to begin with. That's my personal feeling about'em. I dont' understand why you'd wanna was that much money on such an over-rated product.
What's the point of trying to squeeze everything onto those little screens? (This goes for ipod stuff and regular cell phones alike)Why do you need a stupid lil camera in them to take blurry choppy pictures that you simply -must- send to your friend immidietly, because it's -that- important? Those screens are too small to actually enjoy video. (Until they invent some small device in which you can enlarge the screen to a foot in size, I'm out)
People feel "cool" to be using this… "necessary to live" technology. Usually they're the ones with egos.
I Phone, Schmy Phone. I do not have a IPhone and will more than likely not ever have one. My moto phone gets replaced all the the time and I have an Ipod for tunes not every thing i need in life needs to be cramed into a little wee vessel.
Just what we need from microsoft. Another item thats full of bugs thats just as overcharged as something that works. Bill Gates, You still owe me for that POS copy of windows ME! I can only be hopefully that I have not bought Vista, and that they do not make automobiles.
Wow, talk about all the uninformed, knee jerk, contrived, pointless comments.
On Apple. They are just a company….. like all companies they have one goal…make money.
Let's start with IPOD. I am an audiophile…I am not thrilled with the audio quality of the IPOD…and yes I know how to compress files properly. I looked at just about every other unit on the market. At the end of the day, no matter what you may think of the IPOD, it is dead easy to use. The user interface is intuitive and fast. ITunes works, and the ITunes store works wonderfully as well. It is all integrated and painless. I ended up with two other IPODS in the family. There are units that do things better. Archos is a much better media unit, and Creative's units have better sound quality. However, the integration from start to finish with IPOD is the best on the market. Are they more expensive…yes. If I take my time into account? …not at all. They work with no hassles. Do they break. Of course they do. However, when you ship that many millions and they have such high penetration, of course everyone is going to know someone or hear of someone's who has broken. I bet others are no different, but 0 shipments = 0 failures if you get my point.
OK… I Phone. I have a Blackberry… and a Nokia. I have also played a relative amount with an IPHONE, Htc, and a few others. I need my Blackberry…. the email\PIM integration is unparalled at this time. I wish that it had the application compatibility of Windows Mobile units, but it does not. The other thing that is not very good is the browser. The same goes for virtually every other smart phone out there. The brownser on the IPHONE is the best, period…. if all you are doing is browsing. If you need to enter info into a form, that breaks down with the lack of a proper keyboard. Perhaps they will make a business version.
Oh, when you want to make a phone call though, nothing beats a Nokia. They have the best reception of any phone. You would think in this day and age they would all be the same, but I find that is not the case….. LG, Ericsson, Motorola, Rim, etc..nope…that basic Nokia still wins hands down for keeping a call running.
Cell phones aren't healthy. The less you use them, the better off you are.
I like to be at least one generation behind the newest gadgets so I can buy them used off the techno-geeks for a fraction of the price.
Although bulky, an Audiovox/Starcom 6700 with an expansion card does pretty much everything you could want and you can pick them up on Craigslist for $100.
I'll buy your iphone off you in a year when it's no longer cool and you're shelling out a grand for the next big thing.
