No iPhone competitor from Microsoft
According to a recent Bill Gates interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, Microsoft will not launch a product that competes directly with the Apple iPhone.
According to a recent Bill Gates interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, Microsoft will not launch a product that competes directly with the Apple iPhone.
The Reuters news agency says Microsoft Chairman was quoted as follows: "No, we won’t do that. In the so-called smart phone business we will concentrate solely on software with our Windows Mobile program." "We have partnerships with a lot of device manufacturers from Samsung to Motorola and this variety brings us significantly more than if we would make our own mobile phone."
Do you think Microsoft should launch a competitor that is more open to third-party app makers? Microsoft has an answer to the iPod – the Zune – which comes to Canada this spring, so why not a Windows Mobile-powered iPhone alternative, too?

Please, enough with the iPhone already. It's just ONE phone and for many people, it's not even the best phone out there.
I use a Windows Mobile phone and not only does it do everything the iPhone does – it does far more – and it doesn't need an expensive data plan to be useful.
Take off the Apple coloured glasses and try to be objective.
Personally for me a cell phone should just be used as a phone. We have computers but I don't think it is necessary to spend so much money on one when you already have a computer at home.
It's not an iPhone, it's a lifestyle.
The Apple movement has been so captivating, with all their "hip" new devices and their "who needs a spreadsheet or budget", unicycle riding customer base.

Iphone? Nokia N95 All The Way!!
guess what? I shifted back from iphone to my SE k800i, cause it's overheated. The battery won't last even for two days. Some of my friends also have the same problem and they changed back to their previous phones too.
Ipod is a big success, but iphone… and I can't imagine they have the plan for "iCar"?!Wake up, apple
If people are looking for a nice phone which does cool things check out the samsung g600 and 800, also the nokia n81 and n82 and the nokia n95. In my opinion there the best phones and phones define your lifestyle then you know what I am talking about. The iphone is garbage compared to phones that are available outside North America. Iphone can capitalize here because our providers don't bother to bring in good phones because… well i wont get into that…
Two words: HTC Touch
I still don't understand why people insist on bashing the iPhone. I think sales speak for themselves. I am not pushing mac stuff on anyone. However, after all of the cell phones I have used this one is the best.
HTC Touch is the worst phone I have ever used I returned it after 2 days, WM is unbellievabllly slloooowwww. The iPhone is not meant to compete at a business level, the Nokia N series are great phones, and have business benefits as well. Let's keep things in perspective, the iPhone is for the MAC fans that want to incorporate thier iPod and Cell into one unit, for primarily personal use. It's a good unit, some minor defetcs aside, which ALL products are bound to suffer, the iPhone is a good unit, the philosipy is great, and it has the best touch sccreen on the market.
Let's try to keep thins in perspective ppl, Apple doesnt want to take over the world, just your entertainment experience and that is what the iPhone is trying to captiilze on. There is no other product that allows you to manage your digital entertainment (music, photos videos) as easily as the iPhone.
I've never owned an iPhone, but I have done some research.
The purpose of a cell phone is not the optional accessories (ie MP3 playes, still/video cameras, etc), but as a means to be contacted and stay connected. Blackberry revolutionized that and added instant email access over the wireless network, which is still within the definition I provided. Any other function on a phone should be considered an added bonus, and more of a gimmick. When you have multiple phones out there with similar quality in respect to voice calling, all extra options are used as a selling feature, to get people to buy THEIR phone.
My impression of the iPhone is that they built an impressive interface and a good MP3 player, and then decided to add a phone to it. This changes the priority to make the phone portion the 'extra option'.
After reading many reviews and speaking to people who own or have used the iPhone, there seems to be a trend – the phone portion is not reliable.
If you want a cell phone, buy it for quality of the phone itself.
Love my iphone! No problems with it, and unlike the other posts my $11.50 plan is all I need in a month not to mention the free web browsing, LOVE IT.
Apple is so rediculously over-rated and over priced. There are better products than the IPhone, 'Crack'Pod and even thier Mac. I'll admit that Apple has come clever, although annoying marketing which seems to suck in trend driven consumers who want to be like everyone else.
If you do your research you can find better products at a much more reasonable price.
Main reson for the Electronic Manufactures to come up with the HDMI output is to prevent Video Copying. Why then a DVD recorder or a PVR to have a HDMI input outlet.
I have the ipod touch and it works great but I doubt I'd ever get the iphone due to a) not being available in Canada, b) I have an ipod touch and a moto krzr right now so I dont need an iphone, c) i dont use my cell phone enough to make it worth it for me to buy another phone (i had to get a new phone this summer and i couldn't get the razr so i had to get the krzr… i like it and i got it to replace a crap audiovox phone. I like motorolla's phone tools which is why I got a krzr. I have yet to use my krzr as an mp3 player cuz i dont have the special headphones nor media card (mine didn't come with them… cheapo sasktel bastards) and i won't know cuz i have my ipod touch… but originally when i got my cell i wanted one with mp3 capabilities.
Basically I use my ipod touch for web browsing (works really well with my campus's wifi network… as good as my laptop if not better), music, and watching videos on youtube. I wish I could add games, etc to it instead of using web apps but its ok. My main reasons for getting an ipod touch were: a) it's cool, b) my fiance got one, c) i liked the touch screen capabilities, d) to replace my 512 mb sony mp3 player… i wanted one with an easier interface and more space, e) I like the ability to use it for web browsing, f) i wanted an ipod anyways because i like their easy to use interface, g) really good sound quality (even through apple's earbuds)
I do not think the iphone is for everyone. There are much better options available in cell phones with internet capabilities… hell all of my cell phones had internet capabilities just not wifi. i had to use my cell provider's network.
I had two audiovox phones before and i doubt the iphone will ever be as crappy as these. Never again.
Unless you have the iPhone and use it you can not compare to other phones. The email is great, the text message is great, the iPod is great…. Everything about the phone is wonderful… All phones have their problems but unless you try it you will never know.
yawn, whenever a company or product succeeds in the marketplace there is the inevitable negative pavlovian response (which, in itself, is it's own trend). over-rated, overpriced? bla bla. i have a 6 year old ipod that has never failed. i'm not the only one. expensive then, sure. but the prices have come down since then.and what were the alternatives then? i don't have an iphone, i went for the blackberry. it suited my needs, still does. that product has its' detractors as well (armed with the same knee-jerk responses based on the same slim reasoning). if any of these criticisms had any weight, apple would have folded up many years ago. the fact is people buy what they WANT. if the product fails to satisfy, the product disappears and the company suffers. pretty simple equation, really.
iPods are just popular because of the brand name. Plus if they arnt being sold in Canada due to a security issue, thats a little red flag right there.
Also, I hear storys all the time about iPod nano's breaking, often internally for no apparent reason, and need to be replaced. With that reputation, would I really want to take a chance with an insanely expensive iPhone?
Like Evan said, Apple is over-rated and over priced.
@FormerMSNowMAC: Too much entertainment in the cellphone nowadays. Cell phones= major cause of traffic accidents. It sickens me to see people talking on their cell phones while driving, and iPhones sure arnt going to solve the problem, thats for sure.
I dont have a cell phone of my own, so Im not exactly comparing it to other specific cell phones, but I think Apple should have just stuck with MP3 players, since apparently their phone option doesnt seem to be the best quality (from reading whats posted above). Why compete with other phone companies?
Props to Microsoft for avoiding to make a competitor.
Microsoft is smart in this case. It has other things to worry about instead of the cell phone market. It has holdings in the computer industry, business industry, and entertainment (video gaming, methinks we should be worried when Apple comes up with a gaming console dubbed the ibox, but I highly doubt it)
Apple products are very chic and trendy. It does this to continue its mass appeal – It's different. Don't get me wrong, their products are somewhat user friendly, although I woldn't pay a high price for watered down functions.
I was a first second and third generation blackberry guy. I have an iphone now and it does everthing my blackberry did only better. I also bought a mac and hate it. The iphone works very very well. spreadsheets, documents and webpages are all better.
it also seems to have a good strong system as I have drop tested it many times. I am not an apple guy but I dig the iphone and have to say "maybe the coolest piece of technology I own".
Nokia N95 THE best phone ever..you know WHY ? because every kid ur gonna look at will have the iphone cause its gonna become so common ..that time im gonna have my n95 black 8GB version and the girls will be like god daymmm ..and yes my internet is free on that
