Wired News is reporting Toshiba, the primary backer behind the ailing HD DVD format, has decided to buy a 30-second Super Bowl spot for this coming Sunday for US $2.7 million dollars. Reportedly, the ad will tout the new price drop (read: fire sale) for HD DVD players, now beginning at US $149.99.

Um, call me crazy but $2.7 million is a lot of coin to prolong the inevitable, which is Blu-ray winning this high-definition disc war after an 18-month tete-a-tete with HD DVD.

So, what do you make of this news? Should Toshiba just throw in the towel and concede defeat? Or do they still have a chance to be the universal successor to the DVD?

  • Too late unless they want to do a Hail Mary :D

One last ditch to sale more players.

Blu-Ray should had bough one too with:
    Blu-Ray: 5 Studios
    HD-DVD: 2 Studios
Don't gamble your money away on this format game!

Too late now, and too bad, I prefer HD over Blue Ray, and I think after all the Blue Ray consumers find their disks unplayable after a year or so due to the thinner protective coatings they will wish HD was still alive too.

It's funny that I have a year old (Nov 2006) Blu-ray discs and they still play.. BTW they are BD-Rs too..

  • A Navales says:

Hey McGrath.. do you have a Superbowl spoof of BD vs HDDVD?

  • No but I don't think Toshiba would use this video:

I just put it there for those that did not saw it yet.

You would need movie where a player in football wearing blue, of course, against a red team. He could talk to the coach and then his guys on the field. The reverse could be good too. But you need a lot of talk or it could be a commentary by announcers.

I hope someone do one or they may take the one Toshiba will do. That would be funny.

Toshiba should reimburse all of us that bought HD DVD before the price cut instead of spending all that money on a Superbowl ad. The ad is not going to sell this format now.

  • Brian Kowalchuk says:

Toshiba is trying to cut their loss, they have no choice. As for Sony, sorry you lost out on the Beta vs VHS, and even though you are feeling the victory over HD DVD, every disc will be obsolete really quick and you will lose out again. "We don't need no stinkin' Rays!!"

  • Tony Malatesta says:

Hi Guys! I sell both units in my store and i can definately see the superior picture on the Blu Rays, but only if they are side by side. In my opinion,i would rather spend less money on the Toshiba product than on Blu Ray. In fact, for most people,an upconverting dvd player will more than provide superior viewing quality while also getting the whole surround sound system for the same money.

  • DrVex007 says:

The war is not over yet. The momentum is going towards BluRay, but it isn't over yet.
and for Toshiba 2.7 million is peanuts anyway.
Toshiba is putting their HD DVD drives into their laptops, people have already hacked the HD DVD to make it burnable and when people can get High Def movies by downloading them and burning them themselves, then why pay $32 for BluRay?
I don't download movies but everyone else seems to be doing it.
Think about this. Why is everyone downloading movies when the quality is clearly not as good as purchasing it in the stores? To Save MONEY.
Why would people buy HD DVD players and burn the movies themselves? To Save MONEY.
The movie companies have alway ripped the consumer off by charging so much for a DVD. Consumers are not dumb enough to pay $32 for the same thing with a higher resolution.

You journalists make me laugh. Or so called journalists, blogger fanboys, whatever. It's funny how Sony has twisted fate into their hands, not wanting to lose. I have both formats at home, and the only reason I chose to keep my Blu-Ray player was due to a few titles. Honestly pathetic. My Toshiba HD DVD player does an excellent job of upconverting the standard version of those titles, far superior to the Blu-Ray deck. Consumers, are being forced to buy the incomplete product. More of hard earned money goes into developing the format that might fully work someday. HD DVD is complete, and finsihed. Every feature you mention that the Blu-Ray will have someday already exists and works with HD DVD. It is pathetic to see consumers still buying VHS, when they could have Beta for a third the price. Oh well, no one ever called the public bright. For the most part of the readers that actually read this dribble, enjoy your PS3's. For the other half that actually own decks, goodluck with profile 2.0.

Funny, they convert my URL to a tinyurl. I guest, it's a new feature to keep them smaller.

P.S. I was forgetting this post about it :P

  • Simon Cohen says:

Yeah, I've had to TinyURl some of the long URL's b/c they were breaking the page width… gotta see if there's a better way to control that ;-)

  • A Navales says:

Sorry bout that.. I actually missed the broadcast yesterday… coudn't be bothered… =D
