Among the seemingly endless number of TVs, MP3 players, phones and cameras at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, car companies, such as GM, were also there to show off futuristic automotive trends -- including a car that drives itself.
General Motors demonstrated its unmanned Chevrolet Tahoe, nicknamed "Boss," that uses multiple wireless sensors, cameras, GPS systems and sophisticated software to "drive" itself around obstacles.
Members of the press watched (or were offered the chance to sit inside) this modified 2006 Tahoe on a mock driving course outside the Las Vegas Convention Centre to see it perform its impressive manoeuvring, sans human control.
GM says this prototype is a taste of what's to come, so don't bother asking for it at your local dealer.
Super or stupid?
At least it might cut down on the nuumber of drunk drivers on the road...

It's about time! I think about how many lives could be saved, YES, leave the driving to them so on the way to work we can relax and do stuff!!!!

Oh boy does this sound like "Minority Report" with all those driverless cars on the road. But like that film (which was laughable as it somehow got around due process) I can't see anyone giving up their right to drive anytime soon. Like the old saying "You go first"....

Really neat but, it can't dectect traffic or anything like that. So, what's the point of a self drivable IF YOU CAN'T USE IT ON ROADS!

I love it. A chauffer driven car without the chauffer. As mentioned before saved lives, fun to relax or whatever and the car always knows the way home.

Self drive cars sound nice but what if you do have an accident ? I be the insurance company will want to know who is liable. Since it can't be the driver then it must be the manufactuer. I don't know of any car makers that would want to carry that kind of liability.

Finally! Self driving needs to move forward to create a streamlined supply chain to manage congestion and safety on the major highways. Imagine you're hour commute where you can surf the web, read a book, watch a show, take a nap?? More details at http://www.alienreviews.com/b/top-disruptive-technologies.htm - this is super disruptive technology for the future. Move this forward!!

Going far up in the comments, what's with this right to drive stuff? I'm sixteen, have issues staying awake in a car just in the passenger's seat-me driving seems risky. I'd be the first on the list. Besides, it probably CAN detect traffic already, to other person. They already have guys trying to make a new public transit system, unmanned-it even sees when people run out on to the road and stops! It's based off the navigation systems of these shipping vehicles at docks, apparently. ('Twas on Daily Planet, while back. Wish they'd make more announcements on it.)
