I am taking a social science law class at York. My professor said "finder's keepers" is actually treated by cops and the courts. So, the cabbie has no legal obligation to return your camera if you leave it in his cab because he/she found it. It's legally his. There is no honor lost because he did not steal it, he found it.

I personally hate using cabs because I am cheap. But, if I have to I will, and I understand like any other service provider they inflate the cost to make profit. It is simple economics in a capitalist country, and there is not need to get irate about it.

this strikes me as a good tool to have for those people who are travelling a lot and have no idea about what the standard rates are.

For those of you who are bashing cab drivers: as has been said, there are good and bad apples in every profession. Driving cabs is a job that I would be unable to do and I am very appreciative of the ones who do it. I couldn't put up with some of the cr#% that I've seen them do.
I use the tipping process to indicate whether I was happy with the ride or not.

After reading the above comments about taxi drivers it proves to me that a small percentage of people realize what it is to be a licenced cab driver. I was stabbed by a customer who tried to rob me for my money to buy drugs. Drivers on the road do not respect that we have to earn our living working 12 hours a day. It would cost people less money if they gave up their expensive gas guzzlers, and shared a taxi when going out drinking etc.

Hey all, here's another happy cabbie story. On the one and only time that I ever hitch-hiked (as a teenager in Nova Scotia) we were picked up by a taxi. He stopped for us because he felt it was dangerous for 3 young women to be hitchhiking. He drove us to where we were going and then waited to make sure we made it safely in the door.In Nova Scotia it was common for all drivers, not just taxi drivers, to see their passengers in the door. It's a small curtsey, but one I miss from back home.

I live in Ottawa, Canada, and I have a tale to tell. One day I accidentally left my backpack in a taxi trunk when I was paying attention to getting my groceries out. It was ner Christmas and there were gifts in it. I later called the taxi company but was told no one had turned it in. I was rather peeved, but bought a new backpack and had my most important ID cards replaced. Coincidentally, I had just moved to a new apartment a few days before I lost the bag. Well, about 4 or 5 months later I took a cab home from the grocery store, and as soon as I stepped into the car and gave my address, the cabbie (who I did not recognize) turned to me and said "I remember you. I have your backpack at my house!" Turns out he had checked my ID in the bag for my address to return it, but my ID gave the old address, and when he went there the occupant did not know who I was or how to find me. Then he remembered having taken me to another building, the one I had moved to, and recalled that I said I had a great view from the 9th floor. He had someone let him into the building and went knocking door-to-door on my floor, but I was out and no one knew me yet, so he was still out of luck. But now he had found me, and the next day he showed up with the bag, and the cash I'd had in it was all there, as were my credit cards.

Sure, I've had the odd annoying ride with a new driver who did not yet know the city well enough or drove too fast. But I have never been ripped off or mistreated. Some days the drivers carry my groceries all the way to the elevators in my building! The few arguments I have had have been when a driver thought I was tipping too generously.

Since I have no car, I take cabs often enough that I am getting to know some of the drivers. They include computer programmers and engineers and x-ray techs and other professionals who are unable to get Canadian accreditation. For the guy who told them to go "home", I am not about to send them back to Iran or Iraq or Afghanistan or Sudan, because I believe they have the same right to build a life for themselves and their families as you or I have.

The trouble with many discussion boards like this is that people who view life negatively are also likely to recall best their few worst experiences rather than all the good ones. So they complain about those events and then the whole discusson becomes a mud-slinging exercise against whatever group is being discussed, be they cabbies or some racial group or religious group or any other group that is easy to identify. To them, I gently suggest that they try paying a little more attention to the times when they receive good or great service. They might be happier.

Best cab drivers I've ever used were in London,England.Perfect service. Then again...not a cheap transportation option in London. Also had a great experience in Paris with a middle eastern driver. When I tipped him...I handed him a large bill,he immediatly refused it and said 'Too Much!'THAT"S HONESTY and WORK ETHIC!!!I was very tired and not paying attention to my money.I insisted he take the original amount and explained why.I'd had a few too many bad experiences during that trip and in numerous countries.Amsterdam had great drivers, but some very 'bad' driving.

On a whole most taxi rides I have taken have been fine. However,I can agree that the standards of conduct in our society are low. This will always be reflected in the service we receive.

There are many horrible consumers out there too.I've never even attempted any service industry work because of them.It wouldn't be a job for me.

My favorite cab story is out of T.O. We were staying at a hotel near the airport that had free shuttles to the airport. We figured we'd save money by catching the free shuttle to the airport and taking a bus downtown. We were too late to catch the bus back to the airport so we had to call a cab. The cab driver got us back to the hotel way faster than the bus would have and because it was one fare actually cost less than the bus! Needless to say the cabbie got a good tip!

Kristy, I just checked in worldtaximeter how much is a trip from the Pantheon to the Colosseum, to see if there were something wrong, and it estimates 8.58 € [link: http://www.worldtaximeter.com/rome/Pantheon/Colosseum], which seems correct to me.

Moreover, that is inline with the maximum 10 EURO fare that you say should apply.

It seems to be that the program is working OK.
