Make a free copy of ‘Live Free or Die Hard’
It’s a first, but we hope it catches on: Fox Home Entertainment’s “Live Free or Die Hard” DVD lets you make an authorized digital copy of the film for your computer or PlaysForSure-enabled media player.

Simply insert the second disc and follow the on-screen prompts to make a copy to your Windows XP or Vista PC. The integrated DRM (digital rights management) lets you copy the film once to a PC and to one portable media device.
While it won’t play on iPods or Macintosh computers, the fact you can create a duplicate digital copy of this cool action flick is a step in the right direction. Hopefully more studios will begin to offer this feature going forward.
Yippee ki yay!

The DVD of 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' actually had the same sort of feature.
I have yet to try it out myself (just got it), but seems like it might be a new trend.
WOOOO HOOOO! About time…we pay enough for the darned things!
You know, somehow I don't feel grateful that they are letting me make one measly copy of something I bought legally. If I want to make a backup, or transfer it to another platform, I should be able to.
Kyanite: You bought the "rights" to watch the movie IN the format the studio wants. But I understand you very well.
At least, they started to be more open now. If it's too open(no restrictions) and they loose to much money, then that won't work for them.
But we do need a true "universal standard" so that we can do what we want. That's the harder part. Just look at the HD Format war. We have 2 format because they could not agree. With the recent numbers in Blu-Ray, HD-DVD will eventually loose but most people stay on the sideline because they want 1 format. Digital copy/streaming is another can of worms by itself because of more players in the market. The goal is to find a balance between us consumers, and content creator/distributor.
It is funny how behind Hollywood is as well as the film distribution business. I had the Simpsons Movie burned 3 months ago and it just came out, just an example.I also had Pirates 3 months before PPV or DVD release date. Use a torrent, use Nero, and viola……you have your own movie…..for less than a dollar! Oh, I have to go….I Am Legend just finished downloading…transcode it and burn it….be ready in 2 hours for less than a dollar!
Stanley, it is not a case of Hollywood or the film distribution being 'behind' as you were able to download the movies months in advance of release date. It is more a question of you stealing the films before they have been released for legal sale. I am sure you would be crying to the police if someone were to steal your wallet, and yet you don't blink an eye, and in fact you brag about stealing movies. Pathetic.
It does lessen the widespread of illegal copying while it also improve the sales of DVDs.

I do download movies off the internet. However, I do buy the DVD if I like the movie. Sometimes it sucks…that you buy a DVD now and next year there is part 2 coming out. Like the pot head movies…I would love to have the entire collection as a set, but I have to wait till 2010. May be this could be a reason why some just download than purchasing it. Few years from now…all these DVDs will face out…leaving only to purchase and download movies off the net. Guess our Internet speed is not that great for that kind of action.
this is for the free movie

how do i download this movie???
Too little too late. I'm going to purchase it, and burn it DRM-free on to my PC, iPod and DVD-R backup.
This gesture means nothing to me, it used to be required by law that you had capability to make a duplicate as a back-up archive.
I'm going to skip the commercials in the burn process while I'm at it, just based on principle.
