Personally I think that text messages are a great means of communication. Rather than keeping my cell phone volume level high, I rather keep my phone on silent and simply check from time to time for text messages. This means that my phone isn't obtrusive in nature, and I can maintain a continuous conversation with whomever the person may be, at whatever pace suits us best. What troubles me is when I miss a call, and have to pay to check my messages and then phone the person back. Text messages are quick, convenient, inexpensive, and allow a busy person such as myself to avoid people who talk too long on the phone. I am obviously not a fan of talking on the phone. Quite frankly it's a personal choice, but I think it's "idiotic" to speak negatively of those who condone it.

I agree completely with Chris, nobody needs to be "in touch" twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, using gadgets...if it is REALLY important, they WILL call back!!!
Besides, in reality, all of these new gadgets are simply making billions of dollars for the corporations that produce them, distribute them, and often charge for the services. Personally I think cell-phones and "text-messaging" are very near the height of stupidity!!! Why do some people find it necessary to be in touch with multiple people at the same time anyway??? If the people are that important to you, then wouldn't it be more rewarding to communicate with them in person??? Communication is a good thing...but we have pushed it far beyond simple communication, and well into the realm of idiocy!!!

Cell phones make it so much easier to keep in touch with multiple people at the same time and txt messaging has made it even better. I dont think you should be using it during dinner but I think it's a great way to say what you need to quickly without having to call. It has nothing to do with importance of making a phone call, that's rubish.

LOSERS!!! I can't get over the stupidity of some people. First of all, does everybody REALLY need to be completely "in touch" with everybody to the point of carrying their cell phone with them everywhere... including the toilet? Aww gee... you've missed a call. It wasn't that important anyway! They'll call back if it is! I was really ticked off when my daughter ended up getting about a dozen of those stupid text messages on her phone during Christmas dinner with the family. Yeah. Thanks. If somebody is THAT IMPORTANT to you, pick up the darned phone and make a personal call! Argh! (I hate cell phones, can you tell?)
