According to the North American HD DVD Promotional Group, more than 750,000 HD DVD players are now in U.S. households, including Xbox 360 HD DVD player add-ons.
Part of its initial success is the attractive price point compared to Blu-ray Disc players – the other high-definition format in the ongoing war to replace the almighty DVD.
Not surprisingly, Wal-Mart and Best Buy locations sold out of many HD DVD players this past “Black Friday” weekend, says Home Media Magazine, because the retailers dropped the price of its Toshiba HD-A2 units to $99.

I guess Wal-Mart and Best Buy are not going to offer the same deal in Canada. No wonder we are so far behind when it comes to these kinds of players in this country....

Walmart and others won't have it as it is an old unit replaces by the HD-A3 currently $299 at FS when i looked.
The HD-A2 is quite old.( i think it went off market here about 6 months back)
Remember Black Friday deals are like our boxing Day Deals. the door crasher amazing low prices are usually limited items that are discontinued or refurbed. After 25 years in Electronics Industry I Rarely see any deal that suprises me so wait till boxing day maybe we'll see a similiar offer here

I don't know why these big cooperations are so stupid. There are hundreds of people working and the can not get one simple thing right. I guess management problem for both Toshiba (HD-DVD Maker) & Sony (Blue-Ray Maker). Both companies are trying not not hard enough to promote their product and right now they are so lost that they even don't know any more what they are doing. And the people who are suffering because of their simple confusion are us.
Although this war does not make any sense, as it applies to wars in real life also, why can't they sit and decide peacefully what step they should take instead of using stupid tectics like Toshiba reducing prices and Blue Ray coming out with better titles then HD DVD.
Just like any war between countries which is a direct result of the goverment actions, it is always people who suffer and in this case the two rulers are Toshiba and Sony and they both want people to believe that what they say is right making people confused about what they believe in.

Hassan Noor is a wee bit dramatic. Suffering? Are you really suffering because of the format war?
Why they are doing it is very simple. SONY. Sony likes to go their own way in the hopes of cornering the market. Mini Disc, Beta Max, etc.
They have failed before, but this time Disney is on their side so between Sony's movie studios and Disney, Blue Ray has an advantage. HD-DVD can still win however by dropping their price to $99 and pumping out as many big titles as they can, but not at $30 +. The HD-DVD movies should be $20-$25. The fact that it can play the old DVD's as well will help. The war is certainly not over, but I think that finally Sony (Blue Ray) will win in the end. So Hassan, relax and watch to see who will win. What is the rush anyway, I bet that you just recently bought your first High Def TV and with up conversion, your old DVD player will look good enough. Besides, do you really want to pay $35 for a blue ray movie?
