AudioBooksForFree.com provides a couple hundred totally free audio books for you to download and enjoy on your portable media device or in the home via your computer or DVD player.
OK, so they’re not the latest John Grisham or Michael Crichton novels — but you can download many cool MP3 audiobooks spanning multiple genres including classics, fantasy, crime stories, westerns, historical, comedy, horror and science fiction.
The catch? Two actually. One is you need to register, but it’s free. The other is you can only download the lowest bitrate (poorest audio quality) for free while the better-quality ones cost a few bucks. But hey, it’s not music — a little hiss in the background of an engaging — and free – audiobook is completely acceptable in my opinion!

Hey Marc, I checked out the audio books and as you said the free one's are a bit light one the audio quality but being as I'm a retro and antique buff that wasn't a problem at all for me.
Where I did have a an issue though was with the few seconds pause in between every 6 or 7 words. I listened for a while to be sure that it was not an end of sentence thing and it's not. The pause thing drove me nuts in no time and that was the end of it. I Chucked Sea Wolf by Jack London and another by Louis L'Amour. I just don't have the patience for the pause thing and don't think I could get into a story read with ll those pauses.
Just like to try and help out AUDREY if she hasn't got to try this yet.
First: As Marc pointed out you have to REGISTER. I would just go with the MINIMUM required info. to see if you even like it at all.
Second: Go back and re-select the book that you have selected. Click on that.
Third: Choose the low quality in the next selection, that's the free copy.
Forth: On the next screen do not check the box that offers a higher quality as it will bring you along to a $100. Membership, unless you want one, leave the box unchecked.
Fifth: On the next screen you will see a multiple file area. This is not a Choose one thing. You Must download them all! As is indicated above with a PC right click and choose save as, send to where you want to save it and on to the next.
Note: The books are broken down into multiple files and you need them all to have a complete book. You will see the file numbers follow.
Hope this helps you Audrey Violette.
See Ya, Ray.

I don't know why these big cooperations are so stupid. There are hundreds of people working and the can not get one simple thing right. I guess management problem for both Toshiba (HD-DVD Maker) & Sony (Blue-Ray Maker). Both companies are trying not not hard enough to promote their product and right now they are so lost that they even don't know any more what they are doing. And the people who are suffering because of their simple confusion are us.
Although this war does not make any sense, as it applies to wars in real life also, why can't they sit and decide peacefully what step they should take instead of using stupid tectics like Toshiba reducing prices and Blue Ray coming out with better titles then HD DVD.
Just like any war between countries which is a direct result of the goverment actions, it is always people who suffer and in this case the two rulers are Toshiba and Sony and they both want people to believe that what they say is right making people confused about what they believe in.

Audiobooks can be a great way to pass the time on a long drive or just while relaxing. They can also be expensive. There are, however, several websites that offer a number of audiobooks for free.
The free audiobooks are available from websites that produce them from works in the public domain. In other words, books, poetry and other creations that are no longer copyrighted. That includes a lot of classic works.
I know a online book store. It offers from comedy, thrillers self-help to business & classic literature. You can find it in http://www.im-listening-audio-books.com

Check out the really amazing audio book delivery system being used at Audio Pod (www.audiopod.ca). Drag and Drop audiobooks, automates bookmarks, illustrated audiobooks for the kids and I can email books and bookmarks to anyone. The have about 1000 books now, that is about double what it was a few months back. The best part is that I can listen without fooling around with downloads, moving files, storing cds, or any of that other stuff that is a pain in the 'bookcase'
