Most annoying Facebook add-on?

By Comments (51)

I like Facebook. There. I admit it. It’s fun to reconnect with old friends, snoop around someone’s profile page and join groups based on similar tastes.

FacebookI like Facebook. There. I admit it. It’s fun to reconnect with old friends, snoop around someone’s profile page and join groups based on similar tastes.

But what’s with all of these Facebook add-ons? Why is it every day we get invites for a "vampire bite" from someone you haven’t seen since high school? Or a request to play TV trivia? Astrology advice? A push pin map to show where you’ve been? Or a "super poke" if you’re brave enough to ask what that is.

So my question to all you "Crackbookers" out there: Do you actually like all these third-party applications or do you just click "Deny" every time you get an invite? Or are you the one initiating these add-ons?

And while we’re on the topic, what’s your favourite Facebook extra?

According to O’Reilly Media, these are the current top 20 Facebook add-ons measured by number of active users:

1. Top Friends
2. FunWall
3. Super Wall
4. SuperPoke!
5. Video
6. X Me
7. iLike
8. Movies
9. Graffiti
10. Likeness
11. My Questions
12. Quizzes
13. Mobile
14. Free Gifts
15. Booze Mail
16. Compare People
17. Honesty Box
18. (fluff)Friends
19. Vampires
20. Scrabulous

I have recently deleted my Facebook account. Numerous reasons for that, however, all of the applications seemed a bit ridiculous to me. The flower/knome garden were especially annoying. I deleted my FB account before too many of the other applications came around. I always made a point of (if/when I added any application) not to "invite" my friends list, I figure if they like the application they will add it.

I have added only one third party facebook app and that was the honesty box. I got a bad feeling when they started and have continued my skepticism ever since. The fact that there are new ones every day doesn't excite me any, either. All these new apps beg the question: Did Facebook users really need MORE reasons to stay online?

  • Paul says:

Yes, the facebook applications are often annoying or stupid but of course… this is just one persons opinion.

That said, we all have the option to accept or deny installing the apps and having that person on your friends list who keeps sending you every new app under the sun boils down to lack of etiquette.

But what is overlooked here is that the reason all of these apps exist in the first place is because Face Book as given the site to the users so to speak. Allowing those of us who have programming skills (such as myself) to develop something we think is cool even if only in our own minds. Personally I've never created one although I've had a look at it and can see the entertainment value there.

To answer the original question though… I was invited to use a hockey pool app which finally brought about something I could get into.

To Marc… I absolutely agree with your "Crack Book" assesment. I see way too many people who just can't stay off of it… on it at work… at home when they should be doing other things… it can be an evil that takes over lives!!! But… this is what makes it successful.

    Just my 2 cents.

Facebook is getting out of control. It started as a way to keep in touch with friends, but now you can spend hours a day on it playing games and using all the add-ons.
And honestly the add-ons are ridiculous; who needs a facebook pet that you can feed and pet and all that(this is the one that bothers me most but there are tons of others)
I also agree with Paul. People spend way too much time on it –they can't wait to check it, it makes their day.
I keep asking myself why don't i phone this person or hang out with them — but its so much easier to have an meaningless facebook conversation . . .

Most annoying add-ons? Well, I didn't even know about the add-ons til I finally, and not so faithfully checked my email to see that someone wanted me to check it out. The first thing I noticed was that the download was not offered by FB. So, I ignored it. But, before that, at the very beginning, when I cautiously registered with FB, I noticed that I could find out what my friends have been up to, who their friends are, etc. The thing that really pissed me off was that my photo album kept growing… with friends & mutual friends added photos. None of mine! I didn't even know most of the faces. And at the same time, I am pestered with more emails asking me to add something else on. GRRRR

I like Facebook. It's fun to go on after I have finished my homework and there are people who I haven't seen for a really long time and haven't been able to talk to because I didn't have e-mail or phone#. I like some of the applications like the trivia (I'm really good at it) and some other ones. I do agree a few are really stupid but I figure it's easy enough to just say no, right? Anyway that's just how I feel about it.

  • Liz says:

Since Facebook users begin around the 10 year old margin, I can certainly understand how many of these apps can be amusing to that group and there is also a large percent of the population that due to an unfortunate accident or a debilitating disease spend much of their "outside life" on the computer. Not that I want to be a party pooper on everyone's rants because lets face it, next to playing around on sites like FB people like to complain about something. So, I guess what I am saying is, if you are one of the users that is bugged by all the apps then ignore them and if you are bombarded with emails requesting you join this or that it's because you don't know how to use this simple little program that offers all the options to set up your account so that you choose what type of emails you get from FB if any at all. So remember people, besides the many age groups out there enjoying the simpler things in life, there are also many other people who for whatever personal reason enjoy them too.

I have had facebook for many many months. It has been a time waster at times. Yet, it allows me to be connected with people, that I may never have the chance to talk to otherwise, EVER. I am a Bible College Student and love putting up pictures from my mission trip to Africa, and from College.

I believe that Facebook can be used for bad, such as the article about child sex predators. Yet can also be used for the good, as a witnessing tool to friends and family.

  • kyle says:

facebook definately can be the most annoying thing in the world at times and many of the 3rd party apps. are very dissapointing, like the ninja vs. pirate application, all that it revolves around in inviting other people to the app. thats it, no ninja vs. pirate killer action, just an invite, though other apps. like the super wall, have really kept me entertained during some of the more boring times in my more dry college classes, after i'm done my work of course;), but i'd say over all facebook, was one of the best ideas out there, it just got swamped with stupidity

  • audrey savoy says:

I LOVE TO SPEND TIME ON FB. CATCHING UP WITH FRIENDS THAT I HAVN'T TALKED TO SINCE SCHOOL… THE MOST ANNOYING THING TO ME IS ALL THE YOU TUBE VIDEOS I RECEIVE. ME E-MAIL IS BOMBARED WITH THEMM.

  • Carolyn W says:

The experience I have is FB is utilized by adults as much as any other age group. I signed up and added 3 close friends as a menas to share pictures and comments but quickly discovered how easy it was to become a silent observer in 100s of FB profiles. I avoided the add on applications b/c I thought they were just a silly waste of time. I began to get Friend Requests from people I knew would never want to add me as a friend. We had previously worked together and barely spoke so why the sudden interest? I think the application tracks similar email or work history entries and auto generates the requests. I have since de-activated my acct. Don't want or need the system to find more friends for me. More importantly I saw a huge increase in spam to my inbox and feel it is from FB. Big brother is alive and well, and it is called Facebook!!!

  • fuzz says:

Carolyn: right on!!! finally someone that feels like i do

  • Samantha says:

ALL of the facebook add ons are annoying! If you take the time to read the privacy policy, there is no agreement between facebook and the third party who created the application, to uphold your privacy. Every time you add an add on you are giving that company the right to access and disribute all of you personal information!

  • Donna says:

I find Facebook very fascinating, a great way to reconnect with old friends and keep up to date with family members that you don't get to see very often. However, I do find most of the add-ons quite annoying. I will usually just deny new requests now, but will continue to keep a few fun ones. I love how I'm able to see photos from friends and family that I didn't know existed or had forgotten all about. All in all, Facebook is a good site and should be used for recreational purposes only in your spare time. It shouldn't consume your life, if it does already….get some help.

  • christina says:

I like FB for a few reasons such as catching up with old friends, being able to see how we've all changed since school. But I have to admit, I am addicted to the scrabble application. :)

  • TAYLOR says:

Facebook is the worst thing on the internet. People spend hours a day on it using the foolish applications. I used to have facebook, but then I spent 2 hours on it one day and realized that it was stupid. So I cancelled my account and am happy I did, cause I just use MSN Messenger to talk to people or whatever.

  • Aliya says:

I think Facebook in its original incarnation was really useful: easy to contact just about anyone without the hassle of digging up email addresses or phone numbers. Even the event and photo applications were great, sure it facilitated stalking but it also was an easy way to keep friends up to date with your life. But now, all these extra applications are just cluttering up the clean look and making facebook into myspace. I agree that they are largely unnecessary and quite annoying.

  • Wanda says:

I like fb for the simple fact of catching up with friends that I haven't seen in years!

My fav application would have to be the FunWall! Cuz you can upload funny videos from youtube and share them with your friends!

  • Tara says:

I've been curious about Facebook for some time and have thought about joining. The negative comments have made me think twice about becoming a member.

  • Stephanie says:

I don't understand people saying, "People spend too much time on Facebook applications."
One, what do you care how other people spend their time? And two, if you're the one who spends too much time, then stop. Having too many applications is not the problem, your limiting your internet usage is actually the core of the issue. Don't blame Facebook because you don't know how to turn off your computer.

I'll agree that there are some pretty weird applications out there, and I simply don't use the ones I don't like. There are a lot that I do enjoy though, and I think it would be stupid to take them away.
