What’s more popular than social networks and online video?

Now we’re not just talking about hardcore fantasy role-playing games like World of Warcraft or shoot-em-ups like Halo 3, says James Kuai, a research analyst at Parks Associates, but rather it’s the pick-up-and-play accessibility of titles like Bejeweled, Diner Dash or Cake Mania. "Despite the growing popularity of YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook, gaming remains the king of online entertainment, driven largely by casual gaming activities," says Kuai.

While 34 percent of those surveyed say they play online games, 29 percent watch short online videos and 19 percent visit social networking sites with the same frequency.

Also according to this study the year-over-year growth rate for frequent online gamers is 79 percent, significantly higher than the growth rate for users of social networking (46 percent). That said, the growth rate for frequent users of video streaming sites is 123 percent, "which could pose a significant challenge to the gaming industry in capturing the online leisure time of Internet users" suggests Kuai in this report.

    I can easily see more people clicking away at online games than Facebook (hard to believe i know) because generally online games attract a wider captive audience range than say facebook (not to mention the age restrictions on social networking sites that play with this too).
    Online games appeal to a wider audience in terms of age range than that of facebook. And they don't have the age-restriction that some social networking sites have. Ideally, facebook appeals to a range of say 18-24, give or take a couple of years. Online games are played by six year olds to 89-year olds. So with that age range comes a larger captive audience.

    Yeah, who doesn't love playing a game on the fly? Quick to pick up and play the game and you can play it for hours. And then you can just leave, and never come back. Unlike the bigger fantasy games where you have campaigns to run and teammates to help.

    What's more popular than social networks and online video?

    I would say doing business online and selling products/services. Social networks are a waste of time and for people that don't do much with they're life. People like that are usually not not creative or contain much personality.

    While it is not exactly a surprise that online games are bigtime, it is indeed a good fact to know that rather simple games get a lot of attention…
