TV wish list: What future tech would you like to see?

By Comments (50)

Imagine one day you can call out to your television something like “TV, find me a live hockey game” and immediately you see a high-definition game of the Toronto Maple Leafs versus the Vancouver Canucks. Voice recognition is one of the “gee whiz” future features consumers want, according to a poll conducted by Westinghouse Digital Electronics, the fourth largest LCD TV manufacturer in the U.S. (NPD Group).

Tv_futureImagine one day you can call out to your television something like "TV, find me a live hockey game" and immediately you see a high-definition game of the Toronto Maple Leafs versus the Vancouver Canucks. Voice recognition is one of the "gee whiz" future features consumers want, according to a poll conducted by Westinghouse Digital Electronics, the fourth largest LCD TV manufacturer in the U.S. (NPD Group).

The question posed to more than 1200 U.S. respondents was simply: "If you could design a TV yourself, what would you add?"

The following are the top answers, in order of popularity.

1. Voice recognition
2. Touch Screen
3. 120hz Refresh Rate
4. Wireless
5. Energy Conservation
6. Built In PVR
7. Built In DVD
8. Bluetooth

So? What would you like to see in a next-generation television?

I have seen the future of tv and it's called OLED by sony…need we say more??

  • Ray says:

    Hi Marc, Folks,
I would have to say I would have trouble answering on the wishlist because I'm not sure that I would even want to build a TV, what with all the great tech thats available at the prices we are begining to see these days.

A good screen, PC, a few tricks including network and you've got pretty much everything on the list. I don't see why anyone would want to do otherwise. All the tech is there already, just have to hook it up and tweek it. The voice recognition is getting better and I don't know of many TVs that you can upgrade when a new version comes out. I would much rather change a graphics or sound card than a whole new TV.

Just think of all the neet stuff you could do with a system like that, I did and guess what I'll be doing in the near future.

    See ya, Ray.

    ur fat

  • Diane says:

I would like to see a television that automatically senses when a commercial is 10 times louder than the program you are watching and turns the volume down for you and then up again when the program resumes.

  • Ken says:

I totally agree with Dianes' comment about the commercials on TV. They are so anoying. I'm always turning the volume down. Let's get that feature on there yesterday.

  • John says:

A television system applicable for viewing in holographic mode…Talk about getting sucked up in the movie!

  • Shawnnster says:

I would like to see TV banned, as it creates a nation of mindless drones. Let's get home, watch the tube, eat and get fat.

If you want to get rich and be sucessful in life, get rid of your TV…

  • D says:

Agree with the previous poster…check out OLED

  • Jason says:

I would like to see TV's show us all our programming in 3d without the use of 3d glasses.

  • Joe says:

Couple comments..one there allready is a technology that adjusts volume for then a comercial on it called smart volume or something similar and it is on most cutrrent tv's. secondly for what i'd like to see in tvs future is wifi for internet surfing without having to purchase a pc at all. finally and only for those rare times you see a comercial for a restaurant or your watching a cooking show i'd like smellivision lol

  • Kevin says:

I would like to see built in receivers for all major north american satelite and cable providers. With the onset of "flat screens" and wall mountable televisions I find it quite inconvenient that you must still consider a storage shelf or somethings suitable to place these receivers. Why can't television producers install a software controlled receiver within the unit which could be then set up on an indivigual consumer's choise of tv provider.

  • Msrk says:

I would like an interactive tv. Some examples of this would be online polls. Or imagine you are watching "who wants to be a millionaire" and one of the extra lives is "worldwide tv" where you get to give the answer you think is true. I also think tv's should have a web browser. I would also like a touch screen an a voice recognition. It would be cool if there was a thing like ebay where people could bid for your things while they watch tv. They should make a remote like the one on the wii so you can choose your channels faster. But all tv's would have to run off of a satalite if it were so interactive

  • linda says:

you gotta be kidding voice recognition is # 1.. has anyone tried the bell canada emily voice recognition, or telus or fido? any little noise in the back and the stupid thing starts over and cannot HELP you. the only way it would work, is if its trained like a dog and his master. only listens to the one tone of voice. and can they fix the customer service lines as well! signed frustrated in ontario!

  • monica says:

I would like a t.v. to have a built in system like the compurter with a rauder, so we can watch t.v. in any room which can pick up the signal of the cable and not have too many wires to all the t.v.s

  • Donna says:

I would like to be able to control the loud commercials that force you to contantly adjust your volume when they come on and back when it's over. An equalizer of sorts I guess. This drives me nuts!

  • chris says:

"I would like to see TV banned, as it creates a nation of mindless drones. Let's get home, watch the tube, eat and get fat." …so says the man sitting glued to his computer

  • Alex says:

The amount of commercials ruined the TV. I turn it on and 9 out of 10 times commercial is on. It got to the point when the whole television experience is just nonsense. Just a tool to feed us the commercials. And they make us to pay for it too. When is enough is enough for those who force all these commercials down on our throat. Head on apply directly on your forehead. Alex

  • Donna says:

I would like to be able to set a reminder during commercials showing a program on in a week or two down the road so I don't forget. You can hit a button while the commercial is on to remind you.
