Sony cuts price of PS3, again

By Comments (27)

With the important holiday season approaching, Sony announced today a price cut for its PlayStation 3 console, the second one in less than a year since it debuted. Beginning November 2nd, a new 40GB PlayStation 3 will be available in North America for $399.00 (US and Canadian). The 80GB version drops from $659 to $499 (US and Canadian).

Not a bad move, really, considering Sony is in third place behind Nintendo and Microsoft and their successful game consoles, the Wii and Xbox 360, respectively.

The new 40GB PS3 model will be bundled with a Blu-ray Disc version of Spider-Man 3. Other extras include built-in Wi-Fi and HDMI output – but will not play PlayStation 2 games (the 80GB version will still be backward compatible).

So, is this price cut enough for you to buy a PS3?

    In a short answer NO!
Since these consoles are useless without the expensive games I'd have to get one for free before I'd be interested. I guess you can tell I don't play these types of games. I already have plenty of DVD players so I don't need a new one and I have yet to be convinced of the virtues of Blue-ray etc for it to be a selling feature for me. I am sure some will find it appealing, just not me.

  • Tarrah says:

It would be great if a PS3 was something that we could actually use as more than just a game system. Since you don't get the full benefits of a PS3 without a fancy television and fancy cords and fancy DVDs, it kind of seems pointless to get the fancy game console. Even though…in the future…I might really want one.

  • Raddad says:

The PS3 plays all DVD movies and programs get it now, and watch what ever you want until you get the chance to make the movie experience better with cables and TV no rush on this part. If you have kids it is that much better, for bluray DVD players are very costly, and you get bluray DVD player and a game consol at the same time C@@l.

  • BioHazard says:

From what I've heard from my kids and their friends, until Sony gets their on-line gaming together and gets a hot game like Halo, the PS3 will continue to trail in the gaming polls. Blue ray DVD's are also pricey and wouldn't be a big draw option for your average family.

  • A Navales says:

Tarrah … You need to do some more research… The PS3 is not just a video console or a fancy DVD player but has a hard drive that can store your photos and music (through the multi media reader included) and do some slide shows and and play your MP3s. After that, you can suff the net with it… not the same with your computer, but still can. Also… there are roumours that you can use it as a PVR… Investigate more before you decide

  • Paul says:

Backward compatibility is a major issue with any gaming system. Sony …great to add the wifi and the HDMI, but to sell a unit that has no backward compatibility to its predecessor is just plain stupid. You would have to start from scratch. Would have been a brilliant move if they would change their mind on that issue.

  • KayZee says:

Had a PS3 since the early days and have to say I love it. The criticism that there aren't huge blockbuster titles on it exclusively is fair – but I think that is going to turn around once the developers get over the learning curve. That said Resistance Fall of Man, Warhawk and Heavenly Sword are awesome games. In Europe the PS3 can be used as a PVR and hopefully that technology will make it to the US. The online gameplay is easily accessible and web browsing isn't too bad. The machine's failure rate is nothing compared to the XBox 360. Competition is a great thing for gamers and I think having three different machines on the market is only going to spur innovation.

If Sony can sell its PS3 at the same price in Canada and the US given parity for the respective currencies, why are all the other products on the Us Sony site to much cheaper than the Canadian website?

  • ruth says:

The ps3 now can be at the same price us and canadian because it may have been manufactured now. The items on the websites are reflecting prices of products created when the cdn dollar was not so high…expect about 6 months or so for prices to come down in canada

  • missy says:

not until prices of affiliated games and movies come down as well!!

  • chris says:

prices in canada are still higher than US for most electronic consumer goods. given the new $$ parity, canadians will purchase through US sites. expect customs to experience HUGE traffic increase this coming holiday season! buy early!

  • anonymous says:

kk honestly i went on youtube and it showed ps3 were overheating faster than the XBOX 360.And if you say the XBOX's overheat, There is a few way to prevent that. 1.)dont have it in a closed or confined area. Make sure all the vents have atleast a 3 inch gap and well circulated air. 2.)go buy a fan!!!!! who cares if it is $20. 3.)they have a dock station that the XBOX sits in and the XBOX if garanteed my the manufacturer to now overheat.

  • KayZee says:

The 360 does overheat, I don't think that point is in debate. You're right in saying that most units overheat because the vents are covered and the machine can't cool. But if the 30% failure rate some retailers are claiming is only half true that is still way too many red rings of death. I don't doubt you can go on youtube and find PS3's overheating, but I haven't heard anything from objective sources claiming such a high failure rate on the PS3. I'm not trying to bash the 360 its a great system, but it shouldn't have taken microsoft so long to acknowledge the problem.

  • Kevin says:

I would buy one, but it has to be less than $299. I love my 360 and would buy one in a heartbeat if it broke tomorrow. The only reason I would want a PS3 is for the blu-ray player inside. They don't offer any games that are any good and developers are going to keep making exclusive games for the 360 and many developers have shifted funds AWAY from PS3 and TO the Wii. What does that tell you?

  • Nick says:

Well We can all argue about which system is not as good/ better than another system, but you may as well just buy all of the systems, I own a 360, wii, and PS3. They all have there good things about them, and no matter what game goes to what system, ill be able to buy it and play it. SO do yourself a favour and get yourself a PS3, Final Fantasy 13 is coming closer and closer, I bought mine for 499 and it came with 2 free games, Lair and motorstorm, the 80gb version that is. Its an awesome system, and having it in my collection is nice.

  • none says:

I'm not saying that the PS3 is a bad system it's just well… a little bit out of my price range. The system has good graphics (1080p) of course, and has a blu-ray disk drive for watching and playing movies and games. If anyone is going to buy a PS3 over the holidays it would be in your best interest to buy the 80gb model with more features than the 40gb model.

  • LANAYA says:

Definitely NOT!!. No diff. from the competition @ $399. They should've done that a long time ago. With holiday season, I don't see any advantage over the other two consoles. The unit is bulky, ugly, and with a bunch of apps that are ONLY compatible with Sony. What about integration with Macs, Apple TV, PC-based Media center. Not worth buying.

  • boozehound says:

    to LANAYA
The PS3 comes stalk with the ability to install a separate LINUX operating system, along side the sony OS. Sony did this intentionally. And Yellow Dog linux was designed specifically for the PS3 (and is free). It comes with everything you'd need in an operating system. Firefox, instant messaging, word processing. And with a USB keyboard and mouse its a complete computer. I don't get why sony would remove the backwards compatiblity. I love ps2 games and my huge library would be wasted.

I'd suggest the 80gig to anybody buying a ps3 soon.

Dont listen to anybody who ses theres no games for the PS3.
    EXCLUSIVE PS3 games

the ps3 is an awesome game system. I am hoping to get one for christmas and have done my research.one thing that has been argued is the backward compatability. sure thats great but i dont have a ps2 so i dont need it.the exclusive games like heavenly sword, lair, and uncharted have me hugely excited. and the fact that i'm getting a new tv also makes the blu-ray player sound pretty good. some people also say the 360 has better graphics but they're not that much better and since i've had a gamecube for a while now any improvement in graphics is welcome.
