A webcam that spies

Is it just me or is it ironic a company called “Honest Technology” has just introduced a webcam that can secretly monitor what’s happening at home (“Nanny cam,” anyone?).

Myiptv_cam_anywhereIs it just me or is it ironic a company called "Honest Technology" has just introduced a webcam that can secretly monitor what’s happening at home ("Nanny cam," anyone?).

Do you suspect your cleaning lady is stealing cash? Want to know if your dog really ate your kid’s homework? Is your spouse having an extramarital affair?

An Austin-based company has just launched MY-IPTV & CAM Anywhere, a new kind of webcam and software bundle that allows users to remotely log into their home PC from any broadband-connected computer for monitoring purposes.

Plus, as a secondary feature, lets you view your favourite hometown television programs, similar to the popular Slingbox product.

On the monitoring side, the webcam software turns your personal computer into a video surveillance system that detects motion and provides a live feed to wherever you may be. Alternatively, as with many other webcams, it can record video to the hard drive when it senses motion, which can then be played back at a later time. Optional features include email notices sent when motion is detected, scheduled monitoring times and the ability to record and burn surveillance videos in MPEG-4 format.

For the "place-shifting" television feature, a USB 2.0 TV/Video Capture Device box is included with the webcam, so you’ll need to connect your TV feed (such as a coaxial cable coming out of a satellite receiver or cable box) into this Internet-connected device.

So, is a product like this a great idea or does it violate the unsuspecting person’s privacy? Is it slick or sick? Let us know your thoughts.

I agree. If there was something going on in my home and I didnt exactly want it to I have the right to know. Its not like you can log onto someone elses computer and see it. Id like to catch my bf in his act if you know what I mean. SIGN ME UP! WHERE DO I PICK ONE UP?

  • Gary says:

I believe they're already doing it and have been for years. Yes there are sattelite technolgy and infrared heat etc today. But, I once saw a documentary on how TV's could be rigged that way. Ever hear of someone getting busted and they still werent totally aware of how they were caught despite being careful.Big Brothers watching.

  • Ripley says:

I am all for this type of personal technology being available to me. As a working mom, being able to check in at home and making sure my kids are fine, or that the babysitter isn't robbing me blind or worse neglecting or abusing my children is a peace of mind worth the price of my so called "lost privacy". When a heat sensitive camera can pick up my activities in my home from space for the protection of national security, my delusions of privacy are long gone anyway. I really dont care if someone can see me doing something private. So long as I can protect my children and leave my home feeling confident all is well, then Im all for it.

You bunch of paranoid freaks! Everybody is selling something based on fear. Get a grip!! Technology was meant to make life easier but it has just complicated things. Identity theft, nanny cam, motion sensors, c'mon people, just know who youre dealin with and kick some ass when need be!!or call me, i'll kick ass for you for $49.95.

  • hommy says:

why not u could spy on your teenage in there rooms when ur on vacation and see if there having any intruders at the young age without permission

  • rex says:

you will probably catch your teenage son doing something you dont want to see

  • the template says:

I dont think you people understand what this technology can really do. Sure they try and market it as a security device for your home, but what if I wanted to hook it up to my co-workers computer or something without telling them. What if i used some usb extention cords and wire it so i can pretty much look at whoever i want to around my cubical. Better yet what happenes if i wanted to hook it up to a laptop? now suddenly i have a mobile spy cam that i can take anywhere. It works for home security, to some degree. But there's bound to be someone whos planning to use this little toy for something more.

  • babyboo says:

that is sick, just think. hackers hacking into your computer to whach your family. Or parents to spy on thier children. Its sick, isnt there any law giving people thier own rights??
yeah sure it may be good if something happens at home and you catch a burgler or murderer or what not.. but in any other way, its discusting. Do you have no care for anyone elses' feelings and privacy.. how would you like to be whached unknowingly?

  • badnews says:

    this is sick bad news.
for perverts and stalkers thieves etc…
you want your child to be safe ok… thats great but the template/many others on here are right…for soo many different reasons about privacy/human rights!
in the wrong hands this can be a very bad toy.
people have the right to be hidden in domestic violence situations, the mentaly ill, your girlfriend, your company etc..
it doesn't take a genius to figure it out, just a bad person.
catch my bf/gf in the act?
then what, spy on them for life after i've purchased this thing or your next bf/gf without their knowledge?
gain some trust, get better locks, have some respect.
    i dont agree with this.

  • Neil says:

For what I can see street monitoring by camera in cities is, by and large a good thing. … If your doing something illegal,…hey. you get caught. It enables the law to remove violators quicker and easier, making a safer environment for the rest of us. As for in your own home, I cant be bothered to watch my kids. They are most likely doing the same things I did when I was younger. I was not perfect back then either. If you are that concerned as to the deeds performed by your offspring, then look to yourself for the issue of bad parenting and instilling the wrong life values!!!
I had a web cam on my pc, but found little use for it. They say that a high percentage of owners have them purely for porn purposes. Everyone to their own. I always would shut mine off and tip it over when I was done to make sure that all any possible snooper would see was the dust behind my monitor. Although there may be someone out there who gets their kicks from staring at dirty computer desks!

  • Paul Russell says:

It's a great idea. If 10 men got these installed at the same time I bet at least 1 or more of them would find out their woman was not as trustworthy as they thought. Trust me on this one guys WOMEN ARE WORSE than men when it comes to infidelity. Bug your phone, get a keylogger for your computer and see what ya find.

  • MIKALL says:

We have a similar service here offered through our phone company. Although I agree with all the big brother & privacy comments, we found this service to be an excellant moniter of our aging father living mainly alone at home. With a few clicks it was easy to see he was enjoying his T.V. shows and not unconcious on the floor.

  • Adam says:

It all depends on who is using it, where it is being used, and why it is being used. using it to protect your home and personal belongings when you are not home is a perfectly justifiable use and if a nanny or babysitter is going to be in your house they shouldn't be doing anything illegal anyway so it shouldn't matter if the parents are monitoring (I know from personal experience being a babysitter at one time) but using it any any way other than intended is illegal and should not and probably will not be tolerated by others. If hackers getting on to your computer is a big worry then you can use the record feature on the program and unplug the Internet cable and when at home and on the Internet you can just cover the web-cam with some black construction papper or use some other meathod of blocking the view.

  • sam says:

part of me thinks that this is a good idea for safety, but most of me thinks that this is sick. whatever happened to trust and privacy and "hommy" you're sick because you want to spy on your teens in their bedroom?!? eww. that's disgusting! it's one thing if it's in a common room like the kitchen or living room, but in their bedroom, that's one place where you should have exclusive privacy. hello!!! people get dressed in there! no one wants to be watched while they're getting dressed!

  • Jamie T says:

For those who haven't heard .. or have an open state of mind to accept all things possible … I highly suggest you see the website zeitgeistmovie.com … The movie runs for about 2 hours and covers everything from how it has been proven that the bible is nothing more than plaigerism, or how bombs were set in place during 9/11 to make the impact more damaging … resulting in the money making war for the United States Feferal Reserve .. which I might add … loans all monies to the goverment … and the kicker … it's the international bankers who privately own the federal reserve that are rolling in the dough … not the american public .. nor the goverment.

i have a neighbor with a web cam in her window, i tryto ignore it most of the time. but still feel frustrated knowing that my right to privacy is being invaded,

  • bunaglo says:

oh yea its niiice….i like it very much…..you can spy on your children in the bathroom to make a sure they are handle the business and not the BUSINESS. Plus if yor wife of ten years has affair with the gardener jose,,,you finally have proof.. ..thank you china for great device

  • Aashish says:

This is not a safe device.Sure, you can see what's going on at your house just as a precaution, but what about hackers and pedophiles? They're experts at this and webcams are the easiest to hack! This thing sucks.

FACEBOOK AND SPY CAMS…All these fancy things are just ways that BIG BROTHER spies on US, you and me. Some monstrous computer, somewhere in Europe or the USA, is recording everything and building a record on each and every one of us. What better way to get info on you than for you to give it to "them" willingly and blindly? Sure, beats sending people to spy on you or follow you around.
