5 phone faux pas

There’s one in every group of friends — someone that needs a crash course in cell phone etiquette. They’re not bad people, really, but they annoy those around them. Take heed to these following five phone faux pas.

Samsung_bell_phoneThere’s one in every group of friends — someone that needs a crash course in cell phone etiquette. They’re not bad people, really, but they annoy those around them. Take heed to these following five phone faux pas.

Go Ring-less. There’s a good reason your cell phone offers a vibration option. When you’re in a restaurant, movie theatre, church or lecture hall, be sure to switch your phone to vibrate.

Shhh! Nobody around you wants to hear your conversation. When talking on your mobile phone in a public place, refrain from talking loudly. Believe me, the person on the other end of the line can hear you just fine if you’re talking at a normal volume. And watch that potty mouth, will ya?

Hands at 10 and 2. You know you shouldn’t drive and talk on the phone at the same time. But if you’re going to do it anyway, at least watch the road and keep both hands on the wheel (wireless headsets are the way to go). There’s nothing more annoying than driving behind a bad driver and when you pass them, you see they’ve been gabbing away on a phone.

Rude ringtones. Maybe you think burps and farts are funny (ok, so do we), but not as a ringtone. Ditto for music clips with offensive language. There are many more ways to personalize your handset’s ring without offending anyone nearby.

Put away the BlackBerry. I don’t care if you’re somebody important — don’t look at your BlackBerry when you’re talking to someone. It’s ok if you’re, say, at a dinner with a friend and say "I’m sorry, but I need to check something for a sec" but don’t type on your phone and stare at the screen when you’ve got someone right in front of you.

oooh… I am so guilty of checking my e-mail on my Q while I am talking to someone… oh I'm so terrible!

  • Karin says:

If you are going to use your cell phone on public transit… put it on speaker so we can all hear both sides of the conversation, otherwise it is rude and it Can wait until you get to your destination.

  • John Manson says:

what bugs me are poeple the walk around with a blue tooth in there ear talking , looking like they have mental health issues.

  • mobile luver says:

I find cell phone conversations in public no worse than those who choose to speak loudly in restaurants, on the bus or while walking down the street. Let’s face it, some people just don't like cell phones, which is their right, but don't condemn all for a few who clearly don't get it.

  • whitewica says:

The worst faux pas in cell phone is to own one!

  • smelly says:

How about the idiots who use the walkie talkie feature so we get to hear their voice, the other person's voice and the stupid beeps?

  • jj says:

The worst faux pas that wasn't even mentioned is talking on the phone when you are in a washroom. Believe me, people on the other end of the conversation know where you are because of the famous bathroom echo that every facility has.

  • Maria says:

I absolutely DESPISE it when people LISTEN TO SONGS OUT LOUD through their cell phone. If you can afford the high-tech mp3 phones, I'm sure you can afford 10$ HEADPHONES!!!! Not everyone around you is a fan of Rihanna. Also, people who break up/have fights/use foul language/call their electrical company to discuss their bill in public….need to be smacked on the face. Taking the public transit for years, I've witnessed all of the above…numerous times.

  • Joe says:

Whenever I'm with someone who does that, I whip out my own phone and call someone I haven't spoken with in a while. when my counterpart gets off his cell phone, I look at him, smile, hold my finger up as if to say "I'll be with you in a minute", and then get up and walk away. I come back in 5 or 10 minutes.

He gets the point. And it never happens again.

  • Neil says:

We nearly got creamed on the highway by an idiot talking on a phone and not watching the road … Wife handles the phone while I drive. Coming back over the same road some hours later, saw his car being hoisted … glad he wasn't hurt, but sure hope the cell was trashed.

  • Kevin says:

I cant stand people who drive and talk. They dont pay attenton, run stop signs, swerve all over the place. I always pull up beside them and yell to get off the damn phone!
I swear where can i get a cell phone jamming device. So i can tailgate someone and cut off there calls!

  • Tabby says:

oh so guilty of listening to music outloud on my phone…I HATE bluetooth headsets and I have the razr v3c…no where to stick a set of headphones lol

  • penny says:

what i hate is i work at a retail store and i am trying to servie you and you are talking on your phone i think it is rude that you do that i don't want to hear your conversation and you should be dealing with the service person because we have to sevrve you to help you out .
so don't talk on your phone if you are at a store

  • roksana says:

Ditto on the retail store comment. I work in fast food and there's nothing worse than a customer who's convo is more important than their order (not to mention the 10 people behind them as well.) I generally stop what I'm doing and tell them that nothing gets done until they put the phone down or get out of the line. Some may think that's rude, but then again, i'm only mirroring the behaviour shown to me.

  • Josh says:

k you're all retarded….cellphones are pointless, but if someone has one, would you all stop complaining about how they use it? like god you all sound like a bunch of babies….DEAL WITH IT OK? there's always going to be someone in the world that does something to bother you, dont make another thing on that list of pet peeves. so what if the guy beside you is breaking up with his g/f? dont get annoyed by it, just laugh a little inside, makes you feel better….the guys an idiot in the first place clearly if he's talking on his cellphone in public about a break up, so laugh more cuz u can see why he's being dumped!

  • Carl says:

The number one faux pas for cellphones is complaining about people who have them….you dont like it, then dont get one!

  • Alex says:

Use you cell on hands free ???????

For everyones safety STAY OFF THE FRIGGIN PHONE …. PERIOD when you are driving!!!!!! It can't be that important that you can't listen to a message or see who has called you at a later point in time. And DON'T TEXT MESSAGE WHILE DRIVING !!!! People who use cell phones while driving should lose their drivers licence.

  • juan says:

I have to say someone who always talk on the phone in a restaurent or during a conversation tell you to hold like if the cel was more important then anyone is lame. I avoid these people because they just have no manner and they just don t respect the other person.
