Know of any good DVD Easter eggs?

Easter may have come and gone, but the “Easter Eggs” discussed between many of today’s film fanatics have nothing to do with the ones decorated this past April.

Dvd_remote Easter may have come and gone, but the "Easter Eggs" discussed between many of today’s film fanatics have nothing to do with the ones decorated this past April.

Hundreds of today’s (and yesterday’s) DVD movies contain "Easter Eggs" — a hidden treat secretly embedded on the disc that serves as a reward for those savvy enough (or determined enough) to find them.

Consider them undocumented extras not listed on the back of the DVD box such as a hidden blooper, deleted scenes, alternate endings, mini-movies, trailers, musical scores, cartoons, interviews, little-known information, video games, and so forth.

Typically, you need to press the correct sequence of buttons on the DVD remote at a certain part in the menu options (or sometimes during the film itself) in order to unlock the hidden goodie.

Movie studios says these eggs offer added value to the consumer, an extra little something to look for that can generate buzz for the disc. And hey, chances are you have hundreds of DVDs in your collection by now so it’s a fun reason to go back to them.

Eggs-amples

In Memento: Limited Edition, fans of this film may recall the story is not told in chronological order. But you can — if you can find the Easter egg. Wanna know how? Pop in the second disc from this two-DVD set and when the animation stops, select the clock out of all these images and you’ll be presented with multiple choice questions. Select answer "C" for all and another test will appear on the screen asking you to place the pictures of a woman changing her car’s tire in chronological sequence. The answer is to put them in reverse order (3, 4, 1 and then 2). If you do this correctly, the movie credits will roll backwards and the film will then play in chronological order!

Want another example?

In Fox’s risqué comedy, The Girl Next Door, there is a fitting Easter egg hidden on the disc. Insert the B side of the movie (Supplemental) and scroll down to highlight Gag Reel on the main menu. Instead of pressing Enter, tap the Right button on the DVD remote and the words “XXX” will appear. Press Enter to watch an actual sex education film distributed to schools in the 1970s! It’s not appropriate for kids, but is quite tame by today’s standards. Hilarious.

Surely you know of other secrets on your DVDs. Share with us, will you?
