Apple has officially confirmed its eagerly anticipated iPhone will be out June 29 in the U.S., in an exclusive deal with the new AT & T (formerly Cingular Wireless).
But with prices up to US $599 – not to mention a 2-year commitment to the cell carrier – is this “must-have” gadget really all that appealing?
OK, it looks gorgeous — elegant, even — but it’s not the first smartphone with a touch-screen interface, nor is it the first product that can surf the web or access email via Wi-Fi or EDGE, take photos and play media files, be it music, podcasts, pictures and videos.
In fact, some might not like its “soft keyboard” design – yep, there are no buttons on the device – and the most expensive model only offers 8GB of internal memory (about 2,000 songs). I mean, you can pick up an 80GB iPod, which can store up to 20,000 tunes – without the wireless features and a one-inch smaller screen – for $399 Canadian.
Yes I know you can “flick” the screen to toggle through album art, access maps and hear voice mail in a non-linear fashion. Yadda, yadda, yadda. But who wants to take out a second mortgage to be the first on the block for this thing?
While unconfirmed, Rogers Wireless will likely be the carrier in Canada if and when it debuts in the Great White North by the year’s end. But as for me, I’m quite happy with my Blackberry and 80GB iPod, thank you very much.
But what about you? Are you chomping at the bit to dig deep and be fashionably cool ahead of the pack? Oh, and by the way, what happens if you lose it or sit on it?

So what can the iPhone do that my JasJar running Windows Mobile hasn't been able to do for the last two years (yes it has a phone, touch screen, plays mp3, etc, etc, etc)? Fact is my JasJar can do things the iPhone can't do, like run third party software, so help me understand the attraction of the iPhone.

As one who works for the US carrier about to launch the above mentioned device – you would not believe the amount of people who are eagerly waiting for it to be released! They don't even wrinkle their noses at the cost of the device, let alone the cost of the unlimited data plan suggested to go along with it. As we all know, there are many out there who have to be The Jones's, while the rest of us are happy with a phone that let's us make & recieve calls!

Babs:
I'm not surprised people are lining up to pay through the nose for the iPhone. The cult of Mac (and the God-like status of Steve Jobs) is in full effect. Hop eyou guys sell a gazillion of 'em.
